Be prepared for a hurricane.

If there's a possibility a hurricane is heading your way, now is the time to fill your prescriptions. Don't wait until the day before the hurricane. Also, keep your prescriptions handy in a dry place and away from small children and animals.

As Hurricane Irma looms, Miami-Dade to start evacuations Wednesday; Broward and Palm considering shelter plans. It is important that you timely follow any mandatory evacuations. Click on floridadisaster.org for updates on Irma and evacuation zones and routes.

When preparing for a hurricane and if you are not in an evacuation zone, plan for two outcomes: staying in your home after the hurricane or evacuating to a safer location.

Plan to have at least enough water and food for three to seven days. Plan for one gallon of water per person, and don't forget water and food for your pets.

Have a first aid kit that contains: peroxide, alcohol, antibiotic ointment for cuts, anti-itch ointment for plants and other skin allergies, bandages, and dressings, prescription and over the counter medications.

You also want to keep handy a can opener, flashlights, a battery powered radio, fire extinguisher, and a hefty supply of batteries.

You want to store important documents in fire and water proof containers.

In case you need to evacuate your home after the hurricane, have cash available as ATMs might not work.

Fill up your gas tank before the hurricane so you can drive a distance afterward if need to and there's no gas available in your area.

If you evacuate your home, take blankets, pillows, clothes (you should have some already stored in sealed bags). Take toys for your children and pets. Make sure you have your important documents with you.

It is a good idea to review your home insurance policy. A few days before the hurricane, you can also go to your insurance agency's website and print out the procedures to filing a claim. You might not have power to check this out after the hurricane.

Stay safe.
